Seagulls

(911)  Amar grame jaiyo re bandhu

Dear friend, please go to my village,
Across Subarnarekha,[1]
On far bank, oh my companion,
Across Subarnarekha.
Once the sand-dune path is passed,
Comes the seashore.

Over there when sun does rise,
Ocean and sky in colors bloom;
Within the mind those hues induce
Unlimited delight.

In the forest, cashew nuts
And mottled birds, forever they but dance;
While seagulls, to some distant land,
They make the journey cross.

In a far-flung song exists an unmoored ship,
Its helmsman chasing the current;
Toward the ocean that ship races,
Free from apprehension.

  1. Why worry when we are merely going home, accompanied by our true friend and navigator?
