Oh Kanu,[1] the ruby of Vrndavan,
You went where, ourselves having left–
Father Nanda and Ma Jashoda,
Milch cow and reed pipe, having forgotten.
Today, the Jamuna races unaccompanied;
Blooms not the kadamba, blossom and tree.
Underneath the tamal at a Gokul moody,
No longer sways the light-ray of duskiness.
Our life, only You are the Dark King;[2]
With You gone, goes away everything.
Today at Govardhan, in the bamboo forest,
No one looks with eyes open.
